Pigment of Imagination

The Pigment of Imagination is a minion-based Castle boss added in v0.9.58. While she deals low damage on her own, her Malevolent Portraits can build up high amounts of Spinfection, defeating unprepared players.

Behavior

The Pigment of Imagination begins the fight with two Portraits closest to her already spawned in. On her first turn, she will travel to spawn in the third Portrait. Her behavior then follows the following rules: If, in the previous turn, one or more Portrait was killed, use the turn to spawn Portraits to replace any that were killed. Otherwise, it hits the player with a 2 damage ranged attack.

Malevolent Portraits also have a set of behaviors that heavily influence the fight. Each Portrait is assigned 1/3 of the pegboard, corresponding to the column directly below each Portrait. Every turn, each Portrait will transform a small clump of ~8 | into dull pegs. When there are no more pegs in their column to transform, a Portrait will hit the player with a 4 damage ranged attack. When defeated, all dull pegs in the column will be turned back into regular pegs, and 2 Spinfection will be applied to the player.

This section is a Strategy Guide and is written from the subjective view of the playerbase. If you think this section is inaccurate, feel free to update it.

  • It's best to avoid killing the Malevolent Portraits until just before they start attacking, as killing them too often will quickly build up an unmanageable amount of Spinfection on the player. Being able to kill them around every 5 turns is the best way to minimize damage in the fight.
  • Pigment is always targetable, so it is important to use high damage orbs to focus her down while only using AOE orbs or relics to kill her Portraits

There are many specific orbs or relics that can make the fight easier. Following is a list of some of them.

  • Being able to take advantage of the dull pegs, especially through peg upgrading such as Swoltorb and Glorious SuffeRing and slime effects such as Prime Slime can make the fight a complete cakewalk.
  • Rubborb is a very good counter to Pigment due to being common on all characters, and being able to bounce a ton between dull pegs, potentially even getting stuck for a while and building up thousands of damage. This effect can also be achieved with a combination of Splatorb and House of Slime.
  • Ballwark can protect against spinfection, although it can be difficult to build up high amounts on the board layout.
  • Applying Bramble can prevent Pigment from moving to spawn more paintings.

There are some interactions with orbs or relics that do not work how one might expect, and should probably be avoided.

  • Round Guard does not defend against spinfection, so combining it with Bad Cheese will kill you before it kills the boss.
  • Protectorb, Forbification, Orbrasion and similar orbs all do not count dull peg hits, and will grant much less buffs than expected when the board has a lot of dull pegs.
